CREATE A NURSERY FOR THE FISH FRY

We fight for a Little Belt in balance through four main efforts that reinforce each other. Creating fish nurseries is one of them. Want to build one?

What’s going to happen?

Fish nurseries – along with efforts to create more eelgrass, more rocky reefs and better spawning grounds – are the path to a larger fish population. When fish are small, they are vulnerable and need places to hide. If they grow into adult cod and sea trout, crabs will have a natural enemy that they don’t have today. In this way, your fish nursery can help break the vicious circle that is currently throwing the Little Belt out of balance.

LIFE DIES BELOW THE SURFACE

Why is it important?

The balance in the Little Belt has been destroyed. The crabs have gained the upper hand. And they destroy the eelgrass in their hunt for prey. This puts pressure on the fish fry. As if that wasn’t enough, many stone reefs have been removed from the belt. This means fewer fish. And without fish, crabs have no natural enemies and porpoises have no food. It’s a vicious circle. We’re fighting to break it through four efforts that reinforce each other.

We plant eelgrass to help fish fry survive

We remove crabs because they destroy eelgrass and eat small fish and fry

Fiskebørnehave

We build fish nurseries and restore stone reefs to increase the survival rate of fish fry

We create better spawning conditions in rivers and streams to ensure more fry

We start with a short intro:
– Why is the effort important?
– How are fish nurseries part of the solution to create a balanced belt?
– How does a fish nursery actually work?
– Schedule and practical info

Build your nursery

A fish nursery consists of a mesh box with smaller mesh boxes inside – and various materials such as oyster shells and/or stones. The mesh boxes ensure that only small fish can enter. While the shells promote algae growth and other good things that can serve as food for the small fish.

Choose your fillings

There’s no one right way to make a fish nursery. So make your mark on the fish nursery by choosing the shells you like best. And finally, add your name and sign up to our website. You’ll receive notifications every time we post a new image of your nursery.

Along the way:

Brian starts a campfire at the fish nursery construction area so you can get a warm drink. Or cold. You’ll also have plenty of time to talk to the other participants who, like you, want to do their bit for the nature. Both locals and visitors from near and far.

At the end:

We end with a cozy chat around the campfire. Here we talk about what we’ve done and experienced together. And you can sign up for our service where you can see how life around your nursery is developing.

Practical:

Wear appropriate outdoor clothing that fits the weather forecast and swimwear if you want to go in the water. Wear good boots. It can be wet on the way to the beach.
