JOIN US WHEN WE GIVE LIFE BACK TO THE LITTLE BELT

We fight for a Little Belt in balance. With four main efforts that reinforce each other. Planting eelgrass is one of them. Do you want to join us?

What’s going to happen?

Eelgrass plays a key role in shallow coastal environments. It produces oxygen and hosts a veritable eldorado of crustaceans, snails, mussels, fish and fish fry. When it disappears, a vicious cycle begins. You can help break it.

Do it. Join Sune to plant eelgrass. Everyone can join in. Sune will tell you about the state of the belt along the way. And give you the necessary instructions. There will also be time for fun, bonfires, coffee and seaweed cake. At the end of the day, you can claim a piece of the seabed as your eelgrass patch. Are you in?

Sune Østergaard is the instructor for the day and is a gifted nature communicator.

LIFE DIES BELOW THE SURFACE

Why is it important?

The balance in Little Belt is broken. The crabs have gained the upper hand. And they destroy the eelgrass in their hunt for prey. This puts pressure on the fish fry. As if that wasn’t enough, many stone reefs have been removed from the belt. This means fewer fish. And without fish, crabs have no natural enemies and porpoises have no food. It’s a vicious circle. We’re fighting to break it through four efforts that reinforce each other.

We plant eelgrass to help fish fry survive

We remove crabs because they destroy eelgrass and eat small fish and fry

We re-establish stone reefs to increase spawning survival rates

We create better spawning conditions in rivers and streams to ensure more fry

Program

Intro:

We start with a short intro:
– Why is the effort important
– How is eelgrass part of the solution to create a belt in balance?
– What exactly is eelgrass and how do we plant it?
– Intro with schedule and practice.

Grass on nails

We need to get the grass ready for planting. We do this by tying blades of grass to a nail, which makes it easy to plant the grass underwater. The nail rusts after a short time and does no damage.

Planting

If you don’t want to get in the water, that’s fine. If you do, we’ll give you a safety instruction so everyone can feel safe. We also practice the technique of planting the grass underwater before it gets serious. We have wetsuits you can borrow.

Along the way:

Sune and his helpers have built a fire on the beach so you can have a hot drink. Or cold. You’ll have plenty of time to talk to others who, like you, want to do their bit for nature. Not only local people, but also visitors from near and far. Here we will talk about what we have done and experienced together.

At the end:

We end with a cozy chat around the campfire. Here we talk about what we have done and experienced together. And as a participant, you will receive a link to an online diploma that tells where and how much new life you helped to plant in the Little Belt.

Practical:

Wear appropriate outdoor clothing that fits the weather forecast and swimwear if you want to go in the water. Remember to wear good footwear. It can be wet on the way to the beach. You can borrow a wetsuit if you want to join in the planting.

About Sune Østergaard

Short biographical text. We make the ammunition for the divers. We do this by tying blades of grass to a nail so that the divers can handle the planting under the surface of the sea. The nail rusts after a short time and does no damage. If you want to try snorkeling yourself.

Where and when?

Sune is excited and he’s ready to give you a great experience.
